The steering rack and column turn your wheel input into wheel movement — faults here affect control and safety directly.
What it is and how it works
The steering rack (mechanical, hydraulic or electric) turns your steering input into wheel movement; the column links the wheel to the rack, with joints and, on many cars, sensors and a lock. Modern systems use electric assist (EPS) managed by a control unit.
At Mr. Service we check for play, leaks and noises and, where there is electronic assist, read the modules with a scanner to find the cause before any repair.
Symptoms and when to come in
A heavy or loose steering wheel, noise when turning, a car that pulls, knocks in the column, fluid leaks or a steering warning light all call for an immediate check.
A dull noise when turning while parked and an uneven wheel return are also common signs of wear in the rack or column joints.
