Power steering pump
The power steering pump builds the pressure that keeps the wheel light — when it fails, turning becomes hard work and noise appears.
What it is and how it works
Driven by the engine belt, the pump pressurizes the fluid that assists the hydraulic steering rack, keeping the wheel light especially when maneuvering and at low speed. It depends on the right fluid and healthy belt and hoses.
At Mr. Service we check fluid level and condition, leaks, pump noise and belt tension, isolating whether the issue is the pump, the rack or the reservoir before recommending replacement.
Symptoms and when to come in
A heavy wheel, a whining noise when turning — especially when parked or cold — a dropping fluid level and oil stains under the car point to a pump or hydraulic circuit problem.
Dark or foamy fluid and a noise that worsens at full lock also call for a check.

Heavy steering tires you out and reduces control in emergencies; driving with low fluid can damage the pump and rack. Correct diagnosis avoids replacing the pump when a simple leak is the culprit.
