Muffler
The muffler controls exhaust noise and keeps the car civilised — when it rusts through, the noise rises and gases can escape in the wrong place.
What it is and how it works
The muffler uses internal chambers and baffles to cancel the sound waves of the exhaust gases, bringing engine drone down to an acceptable level.
We inspect the shell, the welds, the inlet and outlet and the internal state of the chambers. We check for internal corrosion, the most common cause of holes, and decide whether repair or replacement is best.
Symptoms and when to come in
A loud, deep noise, a metallic rattle, vibration or a drone that grows with acceleration point to a holed or loose muffler. Rusty water dripping is another sign.
Come in when the sound suddenly changes, when the car goes “sporty” without your wanting it to, or after scraping the underbody on a bump or pothole.
