Catalytic converter

The catalytic converter turns toxic exhaust gases into less harmful ones — when it fails, the car loses power, burns more fuel and pollutes more.

What it is and how it works

The converter is a ceramic honeycomb coated with precious metals that drives chemical reactions in the exhaust, cutting carbon monoxide, hydrocarbons and nitrogen oxides.

We assess it with a scanner, lambda sensor readings and a physical inspection, checking whether it is clogged, contaminated or has a melted core. We only recommend replacement when diagnosis confirms it.

Symptoms and when to come in

A check-engine light, a rotten-egg smell, power loss, rough idle and failing an emissions test are typical of a failing converter.

A metallic rattle when tapped lightly points to a broken core. Come in as soon as you notice these signs, since a clogged converter can damage the engine.

Why it matters and why Mr. Service

Often the converter fails because of another fault — bad plugs, sensor or injection. Replacing it without finding the cause lets the problem return.

At Mr. Service we run a full diagnosis before quoting, so you do not pay for a part that will not fix it. We work on domestic and imported cars of all brands, with a 3-month warranty on labour, a quote approved before we start, and service in Portuguese, English and Turkish.
