Exhaust manifold
The exhaust manifold collects gases straight from the engine and feeds the rest of the system — cracks there cause noise, smell and power loss.
What it is and how it works
The manifold is the first exhaust part, bolted to the engine head, and receives the hottest gases. Made of cast iron or steel, it endures wide temperature swings at every start.
We inspect for cracks, warping, burnt gaskets, loose or broken studs and the state of the flange. On some engines the manifold houses the lambda sensor, which we also check.
Symptoms and when to come in
A metallic ticking on a cold engine that fades once warm, exhaust smell in the engine bay, a check-engine light and power loss are classic signs of a cracked manifold or leaking gasket.
Come in as soon as you hear that cold-start noise or smell strong exhaust, since the leak grows over time and skews the injection readings.
