When to change your car’s oil? Complete guide

An oil change is the simplest maintenance job and, at the same time, the one that prevents the most expensive repairs. Oil lubricates, cools and cleans the engine; when it loses its properties, wear accelerates. Here is what you need to get the interval and the right type for your car.
How often should you change it?
Rule number one is to follow the manufacturer’s manual — it lists the interval and the oil specification for your model. As a general reference for Brazilian driving:
- Mineral oil: every 5,000 km (now rare in new cars).
- Semi-synthetic oil: roughly every 7,500 km.
- Synthetic oil: between 10,000 and 15,000 km, depending on the maker.
São Paulo’s heavy traffic counts as "severe use": many cold starts, long idling and short trips. In those cases, change it earlier — and never exceed 12 months even if you have not reached the mileage, because oil ages over time.
Signs it is overdue
- Oil or service light on the dashboard.
- Very dark, thick oil on the dipstick (or level below minimum).
- Noisier engine, knocking when cold.
- Fuel consumption rising with no explanation.
Check the level with the dipstick on a cold engine and level ground, every two or three weeks. A low level between changes may indicate consumption or a leak — worth investigating.
Oil and filter go together
Replace the oil filter at every oil change: a saturated filter lets impurities through that wear the engine. Take the chance to check the other filters (air, fuel, cabin) and fluid levels.
Which oil should you use?
What matters is the specification, not just the viscosity (e.g. 5W-30). Each maker requires specific standards (API, ACEA or the brand’s own). Using an oil outside spec may not protect the engine and can even affect the warranty. When in doubt, request a quote with your model and year — we will recommend the correct oil.
