Check-engine light on: what to do?

The check-engine light — the engine-shaped icon on the dashboard — means the electronic control unit detected a fault. It can be something simple or something serious; the only way to know is to read the fault code with a scanner.
Steady vs. flashing light
- Steady amber light: a fault is logged. You can drive with care, but book diagnostics soon.
- Flashing light: a serious fault (usually misfire) that can damage the catalytic converter. Slow down and get to the workshop as soon as possible.
Most common causes
- A loose fuel cap (yes, that turns the light on).
- A faulty lambda (oxygen) sensor.
- Worn spark plugs or ignition coils — misfire.
- A dirty/faulty air-flow (MAF) or temperature sensor.
- A catalytic converter running below efficiency.
Why not replace parts "on a guess"
The same code can have several causes. Replacing parts without diagnosis wastes money and often the light comes back. Computerized diagnostics reads the codes, live sensor data and the fault history to pinpoint the exact cause.
